Explain third party car insurance for BMWs

Car insurance is compulsory in the United Kingdom. It is a criminal offence to be in control of a motor vehicle without insurance. This means that you can be arrested, fined or even sent to jail if you are in a car in possession of the keys even if the engine is not running.

There are several standard policies available for normal home user car insurance. Usually the cheapest available is and the most basic package or cover you can buy is called third party. We would advise you that if you are buying a new or nearly new BMW not to opt for this policy. Ideally, we would only recommend a third party car insurance policy to people in possession or who are about to buy a vehicle over ten to fifteen years old or if you are only going to be in ownership of a car for a very short period of time, or will just have it parked on the side of the road.

A third party car insurance policy will not cover you or your car in the event of your vehicle being stolen, or destroyed in part or in whole by fire, be it through a mechanical failure or through an act of vandalism. You may find it awfully difficult to find just this type of car insurance on its own. It is usually sold as an add on to other car related products, such as breakdown assistance, or in some cases, if you have bought a brand new car and want to drive it off the forecourt as you take delivery.

Third party cover explained

Third party is a very basic for of car insurance, regardless of if you are insuring a BMW or not. It is primarily designed to protect other road users and pedestrians rather than you or your car. We strongly advise you not to take out a third party policy cover only. Here is a short but sweet breakdown of what a third party only policy would cover.

  • Liability for injuries to other people, including passengers
  • Liability for damage to other people's property
  • Liability of passengers for accidents caused by them
  • Liability arising from the use of a caravan or trailer, while attached to the car

You will also find that you will have to pay a certain excess too, ranging from the first £50.00 of any claim to at up to or above 25% of the full cost of the claim against you. As you can see, you are not allowed to claim in the event that anything happens to you or your car. If you have spent a large amount of money on a BMW, or have entered into a credit agreement for your BMW, then I would strongly advise you not to opt for this cheap option.
